When I received our assignment sheet from our editor-in-chief, I saw the headline “Foreword Story: That’s Death Over Designer” and I immediately reply. Ironically, I was having a conversation just days earlier relating to the killer topic with a great friend and mentor of mine, author and lyricist Gene “Malice ” Thorton. The conversation came along because an artist signed to Universal Records was recently arrested in Hampton, Va for assaulting and robbing a man for jumping in front of him and taking the last pair of Jordans. My thing is if you have a legit contract with a label, why are you punching people over the last paper of shoes? Whats the real point of trappin’ all day and hustling’ all night if when you do finally make it to the top, you’re still acting like a hooligan?

The news of our hometown rapper getting a head of himself trigger a line I’ve hear J. Cole himself recite. “They killing niggas for J’s, that’s death over designer.” That line alone expresses the apparent stupidity that is flooding our communities with unnecessary violence. I voiced that that statement is relevant to the corruption of our society and being the enthused person Malice can be, he cut me off immediately by responding “not only is it relevant, it personifies literally what we have come to as a society, and it makes total sense. Without God these things happen.” I couldn’t agree more,

Now I’m not a weekly contributor to anybody’s holy sanctuary but the truth is in front of us. It does seem like people have traded in their faith for Fendi and their morals for Maserati. No longer are we as a society spitting our Hail Marry’s or giving up cussing or drinking for lent. A nice pair of $45 pumps, a silk rap and an American Apparel dress just won’t cut it now a days. If the bottom of you shoe isn’t red or engrave with double G’s, your an L7 weenie and you better not be caught dead in it, not even in church.

More and more people become caught in the greedy web that fashions cultural industry has woven. The buying and selling of over priced items, advertised as the best thing since sliced bread, by multimillion dollar actors, artist and musicians, has brained washed our youth into becoming money hungry foot soldiers, who have no sense in appreciating the simple things in life. When will our society realize that the media is only the opinion of a small percentage of our modern day elites? Sad to say, but probably no time soon.
